The current UN needs a rival body - Mali's Aminata Traore

Aminata Traore, a former Malian minister of Culture and Tourism, has criticised the current structure of the United Nations going as far as calling for a rival global governance entity to be formed.

She went on the ‘rival UN’ tangent after stating that she wanted to add her voice to the news that the United Nations was aiming to get its first female Secretary General to replace outgoing Ban Ki-moon.

Speaking in an interview with Agence France-Presse (AFP) in an interview in Paris, Aminata said; ‘‘We need another UN organization,’‘ stating further that the current diplomacy of UN no longer works.

“A more autonomous UN and not (one) manipulated by the great powers, through the Security Council can make a difference,” she charged. She also insisted that the UN Security Council should be less militaristic in its posturing.

The 69-year old former United Nations Development Program (UNDP) coordinator was speaking during a “World Conference for Peace and Progress” event organized by the French Communist Party.

Her native Mali has been under attacks from insurhents leading to the deployment of international military intervention launched in 2003, till date however swathes of land in the north of the Sahelian country still remains in the hands of insurgents.

“Conflicts are there but must answers always be exclusively military?” she quizzed, calling for alternative measures to be used in addressing conflicts.
